The typical New Year’s resolution goes something like this “I hereby resolve to lose “X” number of pounds by the end of the year”. The resolution is then promptly set aside as everyone adjourns to the kitchen for dessert. This year, choose something that is easy and that could have a profound impact on your quality of life: Resolve to see an optometrist for a comprehensive vision exam!

Seeing an optometrist for an eye exam can catch developing vision health issues in their early stages and prevent complications from developing down the road. A comprehensive eye exam includes a variety of tests using everything from the standard chart tests to sophisticated computerized equipment and allows the doctor to identify problems such as glaucoma, conjunctivitis, keratitis, macular degeneration, cataracts, optic nerve abnormalities and blood vessel abnormalities.

Regular vision exams are especially important for school age children, since much of their learning is visual. So make sure that your New Years resolution includes making appointments for any family members in your household to have their eyes checked as well. Earlier this year, a report from the American Optometric Association’s School Readiness Summit called comprehensive eye exams for school-aged children  “a key element of ensuring school readiness in American children”…and we couldn’t agree more!
