Glaucoma has been named the “silent thief of sight” due to the way it gradually damages sight, progressing to complete blindness if left untreated.
Generally but not always, Glaucoma is associated with increased pressure of fluid within the eye. If the intraocular pressure (IOP) is high one is said to have “ocular hypertension”. When low intraocular pressure is detected, the term “low tension glaucoma” may be used. A high intraocular pressure is a significant risk factor for developing glaucoma, however not every case of high intraocular pressure will develop into glaucoma.
Glaucoma: Signs of The Silent Thief
Glaucoma begins by attacking peripheral vision, typically causing objects to appear less clearly. At first, it is possible to compensate by squinting or turning the head to focus better. Even more unnerving is that due to the fact that glaucoma is generally painless, initially affects peripheral vision and progresses slowly, many people with glaucoma don’t even know they have it!
Since glaucoma can accelerate very quickly, it’s important to have a regular eye exam. Your Optometrist is able to check your eyes for minor changes and deterioration before it becomes serious.
